They grow to a maximum length of about 12 cm and have large photophores characteristically arranged in series or small groups. Some Hatchetfishes have tubular eyes that are directed upward. Hatchetfishes and Pearlsides are zooplanktivores and many species make sightly migrations towards the surface to feed.
