The single species in this family is found worldwide, in deep water from 500 m to as deep as 7000 m. It is one of the strangest of all fishes. The Pelican Eel is believed to use its enormous mouth as a fishing net to capture small pelagic fishes, cephalopods and crustaceans such as shrimps and copepods.The Eel grows to about 75 cm in length.
