Lanternfishes are an important part of the food chain in the open ocean, feeding on a variety of zooplankton in the nutrient rich upper layers of the water. They are preyed on by a wide range of pelagic fishes, as well as mammals such as whales and seals even seabirds and contitute the largest proportion, by biomass, of deepwater pelagic fishes.
